Pitchers, Catchers, and the Rest of the Team

Today, Friday the 13th was the first full day of pitchers and catchers camp. It came just in time although it could have been earlier. Today there are two college basketball games, seven hockey games, a golf tournament, four women’s basketball games, and the 2009 Rookie Challenge. Some could argue that today is the loneliest day in the history of sports. It would be the loneliest day in sports if the NBA Rookie Challenge wasn’t today at nine P.M. eastern. I’m getting off track though. I know that all the first few days of pitchers and catchers camp is just conditioning, stretching, and throwing the ball around. The real work doesn’t start until Monday when position players report to camp. The only problem is Kevin Youkillis and Chris Carter will not arrive at camp . . . because they are already there. I think it would be kind of boring to be the only two position players (besides catchers) to be there. Like all of the drills would be mostly related to the pitchers and catchers. I’m sure they have someone else training Youk and Carter though. Everyone seems healthy or better. It looks like Brad Penny and Jon Smoltz or doing great but Mike Lowell might need a little extra time maybe till the end of spring training but he should be able to practice Monday. Josh Beckett is also looking great. When he threw yesterday he seemed like when he had his 2007 form according to reports. Jed Lowrie who got a left wrist sprain and an unknown fracture should also be ready to compete for the starting spot at shortstop. Julio Lugo also will be after recovering from a torn right quad. David Ortiz looks healed and should have a Big Papi type season smacking 40 homers out of the yard. Mark Kotsay looks to be the only Red Sox position player not ready for spring training. He underwent back surgery and looks like he will be ready in May. Another big question for the Red Sox in spring training is will Josh Bard be able to catcher knuckleballer, Tim Wakefield? I think he will. There will be a few rough spots, most of them coming in spring training but I think he will. Sure he stunk last time he tried t catch him but he saw a guy catch a knuckleballer in San Diego with the Padres and that must count for something. Spring Training is where champions are made. Prospects get called up, players meet new teammates, and baseball starts again.

The Steelers and Big Game Ollie

Last night the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals 27-23. I thought the score would be 34-21. I was pretty close. I don’t really like either teams but I kind of like Pittsburgh. If Arizona won then I could say my Patriots beat the NFL champions by 40! I was cheering for whoever won me money. I ended up making twenty dollars! In the first quarter Pittsburgh was very close to scoring a touchdown then the Cardinals challenged the play and got it so the Steelers settled for a field goal. In the second quarter Pittsburgh scored two touchdowns and two extra points, which are the stupidest thing in football. The Cardinals scored one touchdown and it would have been two if James Harrison, a linebacker didn’t intercept the ball in the end zone and then run 100 yards to score a touchdown with no time left! I think Harrison should have been MVP for that play. In the third quarter the only thing that happened was the Steelers kicked a field goal. Then in the forth quarter Kurt Warner and the Cardinals come back, scoring 16 points, two touchdowns, two extra points, and a safety. The Steelers though scored a touchdown in the last minute and Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers were off to Disney World and Antoine Homes won Super Bowl MVP.

Oliver Perez resigned with the New York Mets today one a three year, $36 million dollar contract. The deal is still pending a physical though. In 2008 Perez went ten-seven with a 4.22 ERA, 180 strikeouts, and 17 no decisions. His carer stats include a 55-66 record, with a 4.39 ERA, and 1,027 strikeouts. Big Game Ollie had 105 walks, the most in baseball last year. Perez has played seven carer major league seasons with the San Diego Padres, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the New York Mets. Perez has played the last two seasons with the Mets. I thought Perez would sign with the Brewers. The Brewers are a good team and lost both of their aces, Ben Sheets and C.C. Sabathia. Sabathia signed with the Yankees and Sheets is rumored to be going to the Texas Rangers. The Sheets move would be a great one by the Rangers. The Mets rotation looks like Johan Santana as the ace, Perez, John Maine, Mike Pelfrey, and Tim Redding, Freddy Garcia, and Jonathan Niese will compete for the fifth spot in Spring Training. Redding and Garcia were signed this offseason. It is possible that the Mets will resign Pedro Martinez. That is a very unlikely move though. Pedro is old and doesn’t fit the Mets’ plans. If I had to rate the Oliver Perez move I wold rate it a 8 out of ten. Sure Perez is inconsistent but the Mets needed some help with their starters and Big Game Ollie could be that help they needed.

28-20=8!

First- I had written an entry about this but right before I left to see a movie it wouldn’t save and it vanished.

Third- I found out my baseball team. It is the Angels. At first I was upset it wasn’t the Red Sox but at lest it is not the Yankees.
Forth- A lot of baseball news the past few days.
Magic 8 Ball
In case you don’t know Eat, Sleep, Baseball made number 8 on the latest leader list under fan blogs! I found out about this today because yesterday I had stuff. Like a basketball game that my team won 48-7! Last time was the first time I made the list as 28 and now I’m number 8! Before today my goal was to be 21 so I could put this on my blog.

Okay I out it in any way. This was a pretty good movie. Okay before I go on I would like to dedicate my number 8 to Carl Yastrzemski. Yaz played 23 seasons all with the Boston Red Sox. He was mostly a left fielder but also played third base and first base. He hit .285, with 452 home runs, 1,844 RBI’s, 1,816 runs scored, 168 stolen bases, and had 3,419 hits in 3,308 games. He made 14 all-star games, won seven golden gloves, and won one MVP. The year he won the 1967 A.L. MVP he won the batters triple crown batting .326, with 121 RBI’s, and 44 home runs. Yaz was one of the four great Red Sox left fielders joining Ted Williams, Jim Rice, and that Manny guy. hey Manny was Manny but he still did good playing with the Red Sox. Yaz was one of the greatest Red Sox players ever and one of the greatest players ever in the whole history of the MLB. In 1989 he made it in to the baseball hall of fame on his first try with 423 votes, 94.6%. That same year he had his number eight retired by the Red Sox.

Style Statements

First before I begin I know nothing about style like the pink hats. Why would I, Bob wear a pink hat. I know nothing about style unless it has to do with a baseball cap and a Red Sox jersey. I have no future in fashion. No the real reason I’m blogging about this is due to a blog, Girly Baseball Chick: A’s All the Time. Not a bad read if you haven’t checked it out yet. She talked about the pink hats. I support the pink hats. Yes, their not the team colors but their different. Sometimes people just want something different. Wouldn’t it be kind of boring if the only hat you could find was a green and gold A’s hat or a white and blue Padre hat? I know one of my readers, Julia wears a pink Red Sox hat. I can not stand the all white hats though you can’t see the logo or anything. That is why I support the pink hats.

Another thing I support is the green Red Sox uniforms. Yes the Red Sox colors are red and dark blue but the green is cool. Now I don’t mean to say I want the Red Sox to change their name to the Green Sox just wear the cool green hats and jerseys a little more. The only reason they wear the green uniforms is because of the Boston Celtics, the NBA team in Boston. When Kevin Garnett threw out the first pitch at Fenway Park the Red Sox wore their green uniforms. When the Celtics won the NBA championship the Red Sox wore the green uniforms. As you see the green uniforms is just showing respect to the Celtics. Even Manny liked them.
Another thing I like are the style caps. Some people say that only thugs were them. That is not true those are so cool. I don’t have one though. One game players should play with style caps. Their just so unique and different then the one we see David Ortiz, Ryan Braun, David Wright, and Andre Ethier wear on the fields. Another cool style cap are the stars and strip caps. They wore them on 9-11. I also think they wore them on the Fourth of July but I was at summer camp then. I really think the Blue Jay Canada hat. Those are so random, awesome, and cool. I bought one for no reason. I know it was a waist of money. I mean like I said about the pink hats sometimes people just want something different. Like the flat lids. I love those. My Red Sox hat has a flat lid. I only can think of one person who wears a flat lid, Joba Chamberlain who plays for the Y-. I told you I don’t like to say the Y word in my blog. 


              

Second Jobs

Dustin Pedroia- Basketball Player- Never

Dustin Pedoria is five foot nine inches . . . according to MLB.com some say Pedoria is 5’5 and others say he is 5’11. Being 5’9 or what ever doesn’t make you qualified to be a basketball player. To play basketball you need to be at least six feet. Also why mess with perfection. Pedoria has won a golden glove, a silver slugger, a rookie of the year, and a MVP in just two full major league seasons.     
Daisuke Matsuzaka- Ambassador form Japan to the U.S.A.- Maybe
Dice-K was born in Tokyo, Japan and all of the United States of America and Japan know who he is. Some love him, the city of Boston. Then some hate him, the Bronx. Ryozo Kato is currently the ambassador. One thing Dice-K will have to do though to become the ambassador is to learn English. Dice-k is getting there but still needs some work.
Milton Bradley- Anger Management Teacher- Never
I got mad in an Oakland uniform...
Bradley who just signed with the Chicago Cubs has thrown a bottle into the stands, argued with umps tons of times, yelled at fans and players, and thrown bags full of baseballs. One time while he was with the San Diego Padres he cost them a playoff spot because he argued with an ump and got hurt. He needs anger management classes before he can be a teacher.

Progress With Varitex

First- Manny and the Dodgers are still just talking.

Second- Carlos Zambrano has to get LASIK eye surgery on his right eye.
Third- Tom Glavine threw of the mound for the first time since shoulder and elbow surgery. Glavine, a free agent, is a low risk high reward player. I think he could come to Boston because of that and his long time teammate, Jon Smoltz signed with the Red Sox. More on that soon.
Third- After the San Diego Padres signed David Eckstein the Texas Rangers want Omar Vizquel.
Forth- Just a quick shout out to got milb? and District Boy who made my link list.
Jason Varitex wants to stay in Boston and the Red Sox want him back. Jason Varitex meet with Red Sox owner John Henry, The meeting was requested by Varitex. They spoke one on one for 90 minutes. Varitex said that the meeting was “okay” as he put it. Varitex could have been lying because maybe he didn’t want the media to know about something. Henry had no comment. They meeting was just Henry and Varitex so that means Scott Boras, Teo Epstein, or any one else. Varitex, a switch hitter, turns 37 in April. Varitex hit .220, with 13 home runs, and drove in 43. He also threw out 16 runners and caught Jon Lester’s no hitter. Varitex managed to make the all-star game last season as the back up catcher. The Red Sox signed catcher Josh Bard this month. They also let knuckle ball catcher, Kevin Cash leave. Cash then signed with the New York Yankees. Varitex has been with the Red Sox for twelve seasons. Derek Lowe, who recently signed with the Atlanta Braves, and Varitex were traded from the Seattle Mariners to the Red Sox in 1997. In 2002 Varitex caught Derek Lowe’s no hitter. Both had great seasons with the Red Sox. I hope Varitex comes back to Boston. I mean what other catcher has caught four no hitters? No one. Yes, he is getting old and he had a down year last season but he is a Red Sox legend. The city of Boston loves Varitex. Having Varitex go would be like Johnny Damon going to the Yankees. Okay, that was a little to dramatic. So Mr. Varitex if your reading this right now come back to Boston.

First- Michael Young will move to third and will not be asked to be traded. Don’t ask me about this one.

Second- Scott Kamir and J.P. Howell, bot Tampa Bay Rays will play in the World Baseball Classic.
Third- David Eckstein signed with the Padres.
Forth- Big Papi (no not me) hopes to play for the Dominican.
Fifth- Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, Jonathan Papelbon, and Prince Fielder went for arbitration.
Sixth- This has nothing to do with baseball but my phone broke yesterday. :-( Today I got one of those AT&T go phones. I don’t like it so much but it was twenty bucks and I can get an upgrade (a new phone) in July when I’m at summer camp.

Sorry I don’t know how to make website URL’s into words. it has every single player to play for the Red Sox by number. A useful tool when dedicating your ranking to a player’s number. No one really good wore #28. So I’m going to dedicate it to Doug Mirabelli. 
Kevin Youkilis signed a four year, $40 million dollar contract with an option for 2013 with the Red Sox. The deal hasn’t been made official. Youk finished third in the 2008 AL MVP voting and the person who won, Dustin Pedroia, got a deal with Boston six weeks ago. When my sister first went to a game at Fenway and Youk was up I said YOUK, she didn’t know what see was doing and said BOO. People just stared at her. Imagine that a girl in Red Sox gear booing Youk! This season he hit .312, with 29 home runs, and drove in 115. Youkilis won the 2007 Gold Glove at first base. In 2008 he won the Hank Aaron award. Youkilis will play for team U.S.A. in the 2009 World Baseball Classic. Youk can play gold glove defense at first or third which is great for the team. Youk made his MLB debut with the Boston Red Sox on May, 15, 2004. He was not apart of the 2004 World Series team though. He was apart of the 2007 World Series winning team though. Youk had carer highs in batting average, home runs, runs, RBI’s, at bats, hits, doubles, triples, total bases, and slugging percentage. He also started at first base in the 2008 all-star game at Yankee Stadium. I was surprised that Youk will only get paid 10 million a season. I thought it would be around $15 million to $20 million. Maybe it is due to the economy . . . on second thought it is due to the economy. One thing is for sure. If there was a best go-tee award, Youk would win it hands down. I mean just look at that thing.

Eighth- Andruw Jones is close to leaving the Dodgers.
Ninth- Bartolo Colon is close to going back to the Chicago White Sox.

Eleventh- Cox Communications, a TV station in San Diego, got a new play by play guy for the Padres. Guess who it is??? My Godfather, Mark Neely!!! I’m not kidding, I swear.
Yesterday the Atlanta Braves signed former Boston Red Sox, Derek Lowe on a four year deal. I know some of my readers hoped that Derek Lowe would sign with the Red Sox. I thought he would sign with the New York Mets. The sinker baller was formerly with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The same day Boston officially signed former Atlanta Brave legend John Smoltz. The Braves now have a great rotation featuring of Lowe, Javier Vazquez who they traded for this offseason, Jair Jurrjens, Kenshin Kawakami, and the fifth spot is open to Tim Hudson who had tommy john surgery last year, Jorge Campillo, Jo-Jo Reyes, Charlie Morton, and James Parr. It will probably be Tim Hudson. The Braves are now interested in a power hitting right fielder to start and not Matt Diaz. They could also move Matt Diaz to centerfield. The Braves want Xavier Nady or Nick Swisher who are both on the New York Yankees. Nick Swisher hasn’t played a game with the Yankees because he was traded from the Chicago White Sox this offseason. Nady was with the Pirates then got traded to the New York Yankees in midseason. Swisher is under contact till 2011 while Nady will probably become a free agent at the end of the 2009 season. I think the Braves will trade for Swisher. I think the Yankees will want one or two minor leaguers and maybe Josh Anderson or Manny Acosta. The Braves will probably try to put a starting pitcher in there since they have nine. The deal will probably include Acosta though, because the Yankees have more “power.” If I was the G.M. of the Braves I would do the deal.
Sept. 9, 2002 Derek Lowe got the win, going six innings and giving up three earned runs. Lowe was ejected in the seventh inning by umpire Jerry Crawford for hitting Felix Escalona. Grady Little was shown the gate by Crawford for arguing Lowe's ejection.

Lee Smith, No, Eventually



Lee Smith is on the ballot for the sixth year. He has a carer record of 71-92, an ERA of 3.03, 1,251 strike outs, and 478 saves. Smith played 18 seasons with the Cubs, Red Sox, Cardinals, Yankees, Orioles, Angels, Reds, Expos. Smith will probably go in as a Cub. Closers Bruce Sutter and Goose Gossage waited a while but finally got in. Smith is third on the all time saves list behind Trevor Hoffman and Mariano Rivera. Smith will get 50% of the votes and will get in with 78% of the votes.

Alan Trammell No, Never


Alan Trammell is on the ballot for the eighth year. He hit .285, with 185 home runs, drove in 1,003, scored 1,231 times, stole 236 bases, and was caught stealing 109 times. He made 235 errors at shortstop, third, second, and outfield. Trammell played twenty seasons all with the Tigers. Trammell was a six time all-star who also won four golden gloves. Last year Trammell got 18.2% of the vote. This year he will get 20% of the vote and his best will be 40% of the vote.

Greg Vaughn No, Never

Greg Vaughn is on the ballot for the first time. He hit .242, with 355 home runs, drove in 1,072, scored 1,017 times, had 1,475 hits, stole 121, and was caught stealing 59 times. Vaughn played 15 seasons with the Brewers, Padres, Reds, Devil Rays, and Rockies. Vaughn if he does go in will probably go in as a Brewer. In 1998 he hit 50 home runs while the Padres went to the World Series. Vaughn will get 5% of the vote and his best will be 20% of the vote.

Dale Murphy No, Never



Dale Murphy is on the ballot for the eleventh time. He hit .265, with 398 home runs, drove in 1,266, scored 1,197 times, had 2,111 hits, stole 161 and was caught stealing 68 times. Murphy played for 18 seasons with the Braves, Phillies, and Rockies. If he does go in it will be as a Brave. In just an eight span Murphy won two MVP’s, along with six golden gloves, four silver sluggers, the Lou Gehrig  award, and the Roberto Clemente award. In that same span he was elected to seven all-star games. This year he will get 15% of the vote and at his best 45% of the vote.

Jesse Orosco No, Never


Jesse Orosco is on the ballot for his first time. He has a carer record of 87-80, with an ERA of 3.16, and 1179 strike outs. Orosco, a relief pitcher is the all-time leader in appearances. He played 24 seasons with the Mets, Dodgers, Indians, Brewers, Orioles, Cardinals, Twins, Yankees, and Padres. He played with the Dodgers two different times. He made four errors at pitcher. He had a great .984 fielding percentage. Orosco is my favorite player on the ballot to not play for the Red Sox because in 2003 in 15 games for the Yankees he had a 10.38 ERA. Orosco will get 7% of the vote this year and his high will be 45% of the vote.

Dave Parker, No, Never


Dave Parker is on the ballot for his 13th year. He hit .290, with 339 home runs, drove in 1,493, scored 1,272 times, had 2,712 hits, stole 154, and was caught stealing 113 times. He made 144 errors at first, second, and in the outfield. He has a .966 fielding percentage. Parker played 19 seasons with the Pirates, Reds, A’s, Brewers, Angels, and Blue Jays. Parker if he goes in will go in as a Pirate. He won two batting titles, three golden gloves, three silver sluggers, and a MVP. He also was elected to eight all-star games. I think Parker should go in. He just missed 3,000 hits and had great stats otherwise, but I don’t think he will. Last year he got 15.1% of the vote I think this year he will get 17% of the vote and his best will be 24.5% of the vote back in 1998.
